FabSugar’s Ultimate Spring Shoe Guide: Not So Fab!

$

When I stumbled upon FabSugar’s Ultimate Spring Shoe Guide—Every Style, Every Price I was so excited.  I could not wait to see what hot wedges are out and get ideas for shoes to wear with every outfit.  That was until I got to number 12 of the list, the metallic heel.  As soon as I saw them I was in shock.  I mean these were supposed to be Ultimate Shoe Guide if you want to look good right?  To make matters worse they featured a chunk heel as an example.  Immediately I had a flashback of Carrie Bradshaw and the other infamous Sex and the City girls walking around the streets of NYC in them.  Next I realized that episode aired in 1999.  I could not believe that the metallic chunk heel made any list at all, even if it had been most hideous shoes of all time.  These shoes should under NO circumstances be worn, unless of course it is Halloween, you are dressing up as Carrie, and you have a hoarding problem and these shoes just so happen to be lying around.

FabSugar I’m sorry, I’m going to go against your better judgment and opt for something a little less….90’s.

The Power of Manolo’s

$

Every girl has dreamed of owning a closet that competes with the likes of Carrie Bradshaw.  Not only are her clothes amazing but her shoe closet is the envy of every girl’s heart.  The end of Sex and The City the movie gets me every time when Carrie returns to her perfect apartment to get her well, perfect pair of Manolo Blahnik’s back.  These iconic blue satin pumps with the crystal broach on the toe are a signature shoe for legendary designer Manolo Blahnik.  His shoes continue to capture the desires and credit cards of women everywhere.

When I was younger and my mom would buy me a new pair of shoes, I would be so excited that I would wear them to bed…   This should have been the first sign that I loved fashion.  As I have grown up, this obviously doesn’t happen anymore.  However, Manolo’s might bring back that old habit.

Manolo Blahnik’s creations are some of the most requested shoes in the world.  Women everywhere love these shoes and the glamorous designs each shoe encompasses.  Manolo’s have been features in a ton of movies such as Sex and The City and even in the latest Twilight movie.  Bella wore a pair of white Manolo’s when she walked down the aisle to marry Edward.

Many celebrities love these shoes as well.  Celebs such as Olivia Palermo, the Olsen twins, and Sarah Jessica Parker have all worn Manolo Blahnik’s creations on the red carpet or in their own private lives.  My absolute favorite pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes are the same ones Carrie Bradshaw had her eyes on.  The Something Blue Satin Pump is one shoe I cannot stop looking at.  Some women wear these shoes as their wedding shoes for the “something blue” aspect of their wardrobe.

I can only hope one day I will be lucky enough to own a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes myself.  I’m not sure I would be able to bring myself to leave the house in them.   I might just display them and look at them!  As Manolo Blahnik said himself, “shoes help transform a woman.”  Manolo Blahnik shoes will forever be classic beloved pieces in any woman’s wardrobe.

The Apprehensive Bra Top

$
0
0

When I first saw the cropped bra top, my thoughts went directly to Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City. She would always sport an embellished bra under a shear blouse. Watching this show at a younger age, I thought Carrie’s trend was provocative and raunchy.

Summer is approaching and bra tops are popping up everywhere. I now understand why. A feminine bra top with a high wasted skirt/pants is genuinely adorable!

However, there is a specific niche of women who can pull this off. This doesn’t mean you can wear your $60 Victoria Secret bra out and about! Also, a flat stomach is necessary to wear this trend. Sitting is unimaginable in this midriff-baring look. You would need to be a yoga junkie to look good sitting in a chair because otherwise a skin roll will most likely appear as you lean over.

To keep the bra top classy, make sure only a sliver of midriff is exposed (around 3-6 inches of the rib cage).  The bra top has a spectrum of sizes and shapes so pick one you are most comfortable with! To try this trend safely, wear it around the beach along with hundreds of other women rocking bikinis.

Sexy City Looks From Sexy and the City

$

This week I’m throwing out some super chic looks, inspired by one of the most fashionable and trendy shows to ever hit us… I’m talking about Sex & the City, of course! Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes, and Samantha Jones have all made their mark in the world of fashion after being on this show. As tribute to them, let’s look at some of the amazing looks and styles that they have all pulled off!

I’m going to start with the icon herself, “Carrie”. She is known for her outgoing style and cute fashion. She is known for wearing a lot of dresses, and she looks amazing in all of them. Instead of choosing one of the many dress options that she has worn throughout the years (which would be so hard to do!), I wanted to highlight this amazing daytime look for the cold weather that is upon us. She is wearing a long sweater, to about mid-thigh, with some adorable thigh high socks/legwarmers. This look is SO cute, especially with the oversized clutch and wavy hair. Accessories really complete a look, be sure that aspects like these don’t go unnoticed! You can wear this look with a dress, or a cute top with a skirt. I love that she wears this look with heels; it definitely fits right in with city style! However, if you aren’t looking to wear stilettos during the day, you can easily pair this look with a pair of boots and you will still be just as stylish and fashionable.

Next is my girl Charlotte with her undeniable sense of class and grace. She is usually seen extremely put together, usually with simple accessories like pearls or diamonds. In my opinion, she is definitely the most lady-like of all of the girls. I picked this look of Charlotte’s because it really shows how you can use certain looks and colors to highlight yourself as a whole, and not just your clothes. I think that Charlotte’s looks so often make you really see her. This cutout patterned neckline, almost off the shoulder, falls right under her collarbones and highlights her elegance. The color tone of this piece contrasts her skin tone and hair color, making for the right amount of balance and complement between her clothes and her natural beauty. This picture to me embodies the beauty of Charlotte. Her bone structure looks amazing, her hair is voluminous, and she holds herself with poise. Such a sweet look!

Miranda is a character that sometimes covered up more, but she also definitely had her moments of vivacious fashion. This super low neckline on a black sleeved and studded dress is KILLER! First of all, black is the go-to color for making fashion statements. Second of all, these studded accents are to die for. They are so beautifully placed, and give an edgy flair to what is otherwise an elegant garment. I definitely like that she did not pair any kind of necklace with this kind of neckline. So often, women think if they have an open neckline that leaves a lot of open space around their neck and chest, then they should add an accessory… WRONG! Deep cutting necklines are meant to speak for themselves, and accentuate the beauty of your skin and the cut of the garment. No accessories necessary! Miranda wore this right with a pair of earrings and simple but gorgeous hair and makeup.

Finally, our sex symbol herself: Samantha. She is known for her outrageous comments, forward gestures, and also her individual style. Most of the time she is wearing something pretty unique, and has often sported some shoulder padded jackets when covering up more- but she can definitely pull it off! One of my favorite looks from Samantha is actually a bit toned down for her character, but completely worth the praise. This cream and gold scoop neck sleeveless dress is a total head turner. She pencil skirt fit to the bottom of the dress really shows off her amazing bod and all those beautiful curves! The gold belt definitely fits perfect with this dress, adding a little bit of bling to a dress that may otherwise be lacking a little bit of color and pizazz. Also, the gold earrings and bracelet look great! I like this look so much because it combines a charming, polished dress with some stylish accessories that really make it pop. After all, city life is about a lot of things… but blending in isn’t one of them. The right accessories can really complete an outfit, whether it means playing it up or playing it down. Just make sure to stay sexy, and these city-inspired looks from the original fashionistas themselves will keep you looking dynamite!

Sex and The City Fashion

$

0

You’ve watched the countless episodes and you’ve watched both movies, now it’s time to analyze Sex and The City fashion. Each of the four ladies have a distinct look throughout the series. We’ll take a look at each character one by one.

1

Carrie Bradshaw: The queen of fashion, labels, and love in the Sex and The City series. Her character can take the simplest of clothes or shoes and give it that extra factor to make it look fabulous. Basically, she could pull off anything. Carrie Bradshaw has had her ups and downs through the years, as we have seen in Sex and The City the movie, but she still managed to make those ‘downs’ look good. We could categorize Carrie Bradshaw in any section including: chic, vintage, modern, hipster, causal, and on and on and on. Just like Carrie Bradshaw said… “I like my money where I can see it… in my closet.”

2

Samantha Jones: The woman who never knew how to say ‘no.’ Her character is bold and beautiful. She tends to get what she wants one way or another. For fashion, Samantha has a very modern look. She is always intact with the latest trends and buys the newest clothes on the market. But do not be fooled, Samantha is dressed perfectly when it comes to a specific occasion. When she’s working, it is strictly work. But when it’s a night out of town, she lets her fashion imagination run wild just like herself. She is a luxurious, sassy woman that lets nothing stand in her way. Take advice from Samantha Jones herself… “Who cares what you are, just enjoy it!”

3

Miranda Hobbes: The workaholic. From late nights in her office to taking care of her son, this is one busy women. Miranda starts off her fashion as conservative during the first few seasons of the series. But little by little, she learned to be open-minded and expanded on new fashion senses. Say goodbye to work suites for Miranda when meeting up with the girls for lunch! Every now and then she’ll drop back down to the work outfits, but when she lets loose and doesn’t let work take over her life, her fashion sense makes a huge comeback. Every now and then we need to let loose and go with what Miranda said… “I’m sure you’ll have a happily ever after.”

4

Charlotte York: The perfectionist. Charlotte York was the one who always had to have her life together. She was alert and always had plans for herself even when it comes to fashion. Charlotte is a classy, sophisticated, and chic woman. You can find that Charlotte’s outfit choices contains mainly colorful dresses and skirts. It’s okay, you can call her a girly girl because that’s exactly what she is. From her personality to her clothes, there’s no way you can miss the fact that Charlotte loves girly things. Her pursuit in finding love throughout the TV series also was a factor to her signature look. When you’ve found the perfect outfit, remember the words of Charlotte York… “Sometimes you just know, it’s magic, it’s fate.”

You can learn a lot about love, life, and work from each character but one of the most distinguished things you’ll learn from them is FASHION.

“Shoe Obsession” at FIT

Obsessed with shoes? Okay, stupid question. Obsessed with shoes enough to walk through an entire exhibit full of them? If you are, then you should make some time to head into New York City to walk through FIT’s new exhibit called “Shoe Obsession.” FIT describes it as examining “our culture’s ever-growing fascination with extravagant and fashionable shoes.” Think about it, fashion 30 years ago was all about garment making, and what to wear on your silhouette. Today, fashion is all about what you wear on your feet. Of course, our clothing is just as important to us today, but shoes now have an undeniable presence.

And who to thank but this woman:

1

Sarah Jessica Parker, also known as Carrie Bradshaw. Who could forget her love for shoes? Now, it may be a bit of a stretch to say that she is the sole reason shoes have grown in such high popularity in the past 20 years, but she has had a major influence on our culture and how women view their shoe collections.

“Shoe Obsession” features over 150 examples of shoe styles from the 21st century from Manolo Blahnik to Christian Louboutin to Nicholas Kirkwood and every famous footwear designer in between. Not to mention how many styles today’s designers have come up with. You will see everything from simple, elegant pumps to crazy 9-inch heels decked out in spikes and multiple colors.

Make sure you clear some time to get to this exhibit, because it won’t be around for long. The last day is April 13th. To check out more information on the exhibit and why it was put together, head here.

Sarah Jessica Parker to Launcn Shoe Line

Sarah Jessica Parker is launching her own shoe collection!

a1

The label, which will be entitled SJP, is a collaboration with George Malkemus, CEO of Manolo Blahnik.  It’s certainly fitting, considering that her infamous character Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, obsessed over the shoes and helped put the label on the fashion map.

The actress will be taking inspiration from “great old-school labels like Charles Jourdan and Maud Frizon,” for her collection, but is also aiming for something different, in terms of shape, color, and price.  Pumps and flats will be priced between $200 and $300.

a2

The SJP collection, which will also include a handful of bags and some trench coats, will be produced entirely in Europe and New York City.  It will go on sale early next year, exclusively through US retailer Nordstrom.

Carrie Bradshaw Style Evolution

If Sarah Jessica Parker is one of the best dressed women in Hollywood, then her former character Carrie Bradshaw is surely the best dressed woman on television. Sex and the City took the world by storm and for six seasons we laughed, cried, and drank cosmopolitans with these lavish ladies. And at the center of it all was the darling Carrie B. Carrie showed us how to date, how not to date, and most importantly how to dress. So here we’ve put together a style evolution of Miss Bradshaw as she transformed from New York newspaper columnist to a hot fashionista and published author.

Sweet beginnings…

The opening credits gave you good enough idea of this character’s quirky fashion sense with the infamous tutu.

Here’s Carrie at the start of Sex and the City in 1998.

293.ab.3.sjp.121510

And as we moved in to season 2 we learned that, according to her, there’s no such thing as being overdressed, or little dressed.

293.ab.Sjp.101310

Here in season 3 she shows us how to be perfectly girly and adorable with her pale pink pants and overly large flower, cause Carrie Bradshaw always goes all out.

293.3.sjp.121310

Still quirky and cute in the beginning of season four.

And by the series finale she is simply divine in a green tulle skirt as she finds her true love in Paris.

From quirky columnist to published fashionista, Carrie Bradshaw made some amazing strides in love and life during Sex and the City and truly inspired all of us to find ourselves first before anything else. As Miss B so wisely said “Don’ t forget to fall in love with yourself first.”

The Carrie Diaries vs. Sex and the City

$
0
0

If you haven’t seen at least one episode of Sex and the City from Sarah Jessica Parker’s glory days, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Ladies, you’ve had at least one girl’s night that consisted of drinking wine, eating pizza and watching some Sex and the City. Gents, I’m sure your girlfriends have forced you to watch it (don’t try to deny it).

A couple of years ago, producers brought Sex and the City back to life in a type of prequel television show. The show stars AnnaSophia Robb as a younger Carrie Bradshaw in New York City. Of course, tampering with such a classic television show there was debate on whether AnnaSophia Robb could fill the very large and fashionable shoes of SJP. Some said the show rocked while others disagreed. But the show must be doing something right as it’s still on air.

Regardless, it’s hard not to compare the styles of AnnaSophia and Sarah Jessica – and whether AnnaSophia can pull off the iconic style of Carrie Bradshaw. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Exhibit A: The Black Winter Coat

Capture

Now, let’s remember that AnnaSophia’s show (on the left) is set in the 80s while SJP on the right is present day. I’m on the fence with this one – where I don’t love the fur on SJP’s coat, I’m also not a fan of all the patterns with AnnaSophia’s outfit. Let’s call it a tie.

Exhibit B: The Striped Dress

Capture 2

This one, for me, is an easy pick. AnnaSophia hands down. While both women look gorgeous, AnnaSophia’s cutout dress adds just a little more sex appeal to a seemingly boring dress.

Exhibit C: The Green

Capture 3

I absolutely LOVED SJP’s dress in the Sex and the City 2 movie. So I may be a little biased on this one but you have to admit the green dress mixes the perfect amount of feminine and punk.

Exhibit D: Leather and Legs

Capture 4

Again, both women look gorgeous and sexy. However, I’ll have to side with SJP on this one. The length on SJP’s dress could have been a little shorter, but AnnaSophia’s outfit is a little too much leather; too many leather pieces instead of just one solid leather piece.

Win or lose, AnnaSophia Robb is doing SJP justice and is certainly rocking the Carrie Bradshaw look with ease.

Inspired By…AnnaSophia Robb

AnnaSophia Robb is certainly making Sarah Jessica Parker proud as the younger Carrie Bradshaw.

robb 1

The 20-year-old actress started out her career in 2004, with a small cameo on Nickelodeon’s Drake and Josh.  It was followed by her first major role in Samantha: An American Girl Holiday, where she played title role Samantha Parkington, based off the famous American Girl doll, Samantha.  AnnaSophia followed this role with appearances in several films based off novels, including Because of Winn-DixieCharlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Bridge to Terebithia.  Her next high-profile roles were in 2009′s Race to Witch Mountain and 2011′s Soul Surfer.  AnnaSophia’s biggest role to date is on the CW’s The Carrie Diaries, which serves as a prequel to Sex and the City, and follows the life of Carrie Bradshaw in high school.

Obviously by playing Carrie Bradshaw, AnnaSophia has to sport a great personal style.  Her own style consists of mostly basic pieces, fun printed dresses, and lots of tall heels.  So when trying to dress like AnnaSophia Robb, think printed, simple, and definitely in-style.

This first look is of AnnaSophia on the set of The Carrie Diaries.  For a cute casual look, select a red and white stripped short sleeve shirt, dark-wash skinny jeans, and black flats featuring a bow.

robb 2 robb 3

In this second look, AnnaSophia is at the Fashion Night’s Out at Henri Bendel event back in September 2012.  For a bright dinner look, choose a bright teal skater dress, nude wedges, and a nude clutch.

robb 4 robb 5

And in this final look, AnnaSophia is at a Jason Wu Fashion Week showing.  For this sweet night time look, go with a black floral top, black pleather skirt, black heels, and a multi-color clutch.

AnnaSophia Robb is the perfect person to play the infamous Carrie Bradshaw.  Not only does the actress sport a very similar look and fashion sense to the original Carrie, but she also fits into the aura of SJP.  AnnaSophia’s style consists of basic wear, fun prints, and a fashion sense unmatched by expect Sarah Jessica Parker.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s New Shoe Collection

$
0
0

Traditionally when we think of shoes only a couple of women comes to mind: Cinderella; who forgot her crystal shoe on the steps of the castle just around midnight, and Lorelai Gilmore; who seemed to elegantly manage endless strolls in the snowy Stars Hollow even in dainty heels. Nevertheless in the eyes of thousands of women, the undisputed “queen of footwear” seems to be the lovely Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. How many times we have imagined ourselves in her Manolo’s walking around New York City free as a bird! She always gave the impression that a new pair of shoes could do wonders when dealing with a broken heart or a gloomy day. Looking at the beautiful windows on 5th Avenue was the real pleasure, only topped by that feeling of power you felt when Carrie stepped out of a shop–bags in her hands and a new fabulous purchase that would accompany her on her urban adventures. She always managed to convey that feeling of feminine power that her heels radiated, as if she could do anything in a brand new pair of Jimmy Choo’s.

a-a1148

That’s why when Sarah Jessica Parker paired up with George Malkemus to create her own footwear collection, the world went berserk. People sometimes tend to confuse an actor with the character he has played for most of his career; but although we need to make basic distinctions, Parker and Carrie actually shared a deep love for shoes. Parker had already worked with Malkemus, CEO of Manolo Blahnik, when she was on the set of the celebrated TV show. In fact, he let the girls design their own shoes for the show, according to their tastes and to what their alter-egos might have loved to wear.

sjp

Parker always takes a very strict and professional approach to  everything she does and it wasn’t any different when it came to designing her line: “I didn’t want to produce cheap shoes for women and ask for their hard-earned dollars and not be proud of the product,” she said in a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar. So her line targets all women, offering high quality shoes at affordable prices.
The inspiration came from the ’70s and ’80s, a creative time for women footwear, when Charles Jourdan and Maud Frizon dominated the scene with sexy and feminine designs. Parker put together timeless features and a whimsical touch to create shoes that can be worn during a night-out but also at the office, without feeling the need to change into ballet flats by 10 AM. Thus, she started with a single sole, simple classic silhouettes and fine materials like Italian leather. Then, she added a bit of her playful self, decorating the seam on the back of the shoes with a grosgrain ribbon. “We settled for one colour only, the palest and prettiest of salmon pink.” The inspiration came from her childhood, “I had to wear hair ribbon to school every day as a little girl. We had the grosgrain in every colour and we had to iron it ourselves every morning.
The results are classic pieces that will surprise you with their simple prettiness and elegance. You’ll be able to wear them anywhere and you’ll never want to take them off. Because if there is one person to trust when it comes to shoes, it just has to be Sarah Jessica Parker!

Sex and the City 3 could finally be happening!

sex_and_the_city_2_12

Sarah Jessica Parker and the show’s writers have consistently been teasing a third film, but now it seems others have finally gotten in on the bandwagon.

Kristin Davis, who played Charlotte York in the series, tweeted on Oct. 3, “@SJP Miss YOU XOXOXO!!” She also tweeted out a photo of herself and Parker at the Sex and the City 2 premiere. Parker replied back with “@KristinDavis Me too you! Heard the news?x”

An excited fan tweeted at Parker, to ask what the news might be, and the actress replied mysteriously: “That news zooming around. X sj.”

And continuing her quest to make fans question whether a third installment will finally happen, Parker posted a picture of herself sitting on what appears to be her character Carrie Bradshaw’s New York stoop. She posted “It was take your @sjpcollection shoes to work day #longdayforCarrie #whewwwwthosesteps #runninginheels #taxi!”

Jennifer Hudson, who starred in the first movie adaptation of the series, also added fuel to the fire, when she was quoted saying, “I think it might be [happening]. Somebody just came to me talking about that. So if it’s in the talks, it might happen. So look for it.”

So, what do you think? Will Sex and the City 3 be showing up in our movie theaters soon? Are you excited for a third (and likely final) film? Tweet us your thoughts @TheFashionFoot or comment below!

Fashion from Sex and the City is just as iconic as the show itself.

051110-Miranda-Carrie-Sam-Charlotte-400

The show premiered on June 6, 1998 and instantly started a revolution amongst women. Soon, it seemed, talking about sex just as casually as men did was okay, and sex was no longer a “taboo” topic amongst women. But aside from this, Sex and the City brought to viewers attention 4 stylish and fun women: Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (played by Kristen Davis), Samantha Jones (played by Kim Cattrall), and Miranda Hobbes (played by Cynthia Nixon). Every person who’s ever watched the show has tried to figure out which character they are (I personally think I’m a Miranda). Even 10 years after the final episode premiered on February 22, 2004, everyone’s still talking about this show.

As mentioned previously, each of the main 4 women are very stylish. Aside from creating a sex revolution, the show has also inspired many women to pay attention more to how they dress. Each of the characters had their own personal style, that hardly saw overlap. Carrie was always the more fashionable one, Charlotte was about being modest, Samantha was the complete opposite and loved to show off her body, while Miranda was generally more professional looking. In this week’s edition of Inspired By…, we’ll look to the styles of each Sex and the City character for inspiration.

Carrie Bradshaw is a fashion icon all on her own. She’s known for her wild and haute couture style, as the writer is often seen sporting the latest trends off the runway. Shoes are most important to Carrie, so when trying to dress like Carrie, make sure to incorporate stylish shoes.

This outfit, inspired by Carrie in Sex and the City 2, is perfect for a nice dinner. To copy this fashionable outfit, select an off-white jersey long sleeve dress, gold glittered pumps, and a fun statement necklace.

Charlotte York’s style was notable for being modest, but still sexy. She embodied the idea of classic, feminine, and age-appropriate, and hardly strayed from her love for A-line skirts, vintage style dresses, and classy coats.

This outfit, inspired by Charlotte in Sex and the City 2, is great for a classier casual outfit. For this look, go with a pink sweetheart neckline dress, black gladiator sandals, and a white bucket bag.

Samantha Jones’ style was all about being comfortable with her sexuality. She often wore form-fitting dresses and loved showing off her legs. Even when she was working, Samantha wasn’t afraid of bright colors and short skirts.

This outfit, inspired by Samantha in the first Sex and the City movie, is fitting for the workplace. For a stylish workplace outfit, choose a mustard colored blazer, a white frilled silk blouse, black pencil skirt, gray court heels, and accessorize with a yellow waist belt.

Miranda Hobbes’ style was professional at its finest. She was always sporting great dresses and fun blazers, and sometimes even rocked a great colorful pantsuit. Miranda easily had the most professional style of the all the girls, and aside from Charlotte, was probably the most common style seen amongst actual New York women.

This outfit, inspired by Miranda in the Sex and the City movie, is great for a night on the town. For a professional looking night look, wear an orange bodycon dress with belt, nude heels, and accessorize with a nude envelope clutch.

The women of Sex and the City were very stylish and definitely looked up to by women for fashion tips. Carrie represented high fashion, Charlotte was all about modesty, Samantha loved showing off her body, and Miranda always had glamorous professional looks.

DIY Series: Tulle

A lot of the time tutus are associated with little girls, but tulle skirts are perfect for all ages and more occasions then you would think. The thing is, if you look closely enough you can see tulle skirts on the runway and on TV, i.e. Carry Bradshaw from Sex in the City. The problem is that a lot of the tulle skirts you find at stores can cost up to 300 dollars, which is a lot considering a tulle skirt isn’t an everyday item. So today I am going to share with you some amazing tutorials for making your own DIY tulle skirt.

tutu dress08w

This first project is a super easy, no-sew skirt. For this project all you need for materials is tulle ribbon in your color of choice and a ½ inch elastic band fitted to your waist measurements. If you can find tulle ribbon in a roll then you can get sheets of tulle and cut it to about 3 inches in width. You are going to want to decide how long you want your skirt to be, then cut the ribbon into strips twice that length plus an inch of material for tying. All you need to finish this is to fold the strips in half and tie them to the elastic band. For step by step instructions see the full tutorial here. Also note, this claims to be no-sew but you will need to sew the elastic to fit your waist, but you can sew that by hand.

This skirt tutorial gives you a much more mature and chic skirt. It also involves a lot more sewing and materials. This project comes from Anjou Clothing and has a video tutorial which makes it perfect for those of you who haven’t completely mastered sewing yet. The step by step instructions, which you can find here are easy to follow, and if you really can’t figure it out you can always buy this skirt from the Anjou Clothing Etsy.

You can use DIY projects like these to create some of your favorite looks, like this classic Carrie Bradshaw look from the opening sequence of Sex in the City. This tutorial was featured on Lauren Conrad’s blog as part of a DIY Halloween Costume Guest Blogger Series. This might be toted as a Carrie B. Halloween costume but any of you could rock this any day of the year. Get the full instructions here.

Make this project your own by using colors of tulle that reflect your personal style. This DIY from the blog Delusions of Grandeur, shows off that tulle skirts aren’t just for pretty in pink ballerinas. This skirt is made in almost the same way as the one from Anjou Clothing. However, if you are more of a visual person and want instruction with pictures check out these instructions.

Tulle-11-AllBracelets-645x429

So you’ve made yourself a tulle skirt but you still have leftover materials? Don’t throw them away, you can use your scraps and make bracelets like these featured on Brit + Co. If you are familiar with making friendship bracelets all you need to do is follow your favorite patterns using strips of tulle instead of embroidery floss. Make this look your own by adding beads or studs to the finished bracelets. Who else is ready to go make a tulle skirt of their own?

Stylist Pick: Tulle and Chambray

While surfing Instagram, I came across a fashion combination that’s one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen. First, you have tulle, which is a fabric that’s popular for skirts and dresses, and is also worn a lot during the spring due to being airy and light-weight. Then you have chambray shirts, which have been a style staple since last fall, and are also worn throughout the springtime since they’re so versatile. Why not pair them both together!? The combination is not only fun, but its allows one to dress up a plain chambray shirt.

Styling them with each other would be perfect to wear for an outdoor event, or even a brunch. Tulle itself always gives me Carrie Bradshaw vibes, and when worn right, makes the outfit and the wearer look extremely luxe. There are plenty of ways to style them both, and if you need inspiration, don’t fret! We have you covered. Check out some of the photos below!

Inspired By…Carrie Bradshaw

Nothing screamed fashion more in the 1990s than images of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) strutting down the streets of Manhattan in her brand new Manolo Blahniks with a beautiful Prada clutch in her hand. Her character on Sex and the City helped define great fashion in the 90s, and now, with 90s fashion making a cool comeback, we can take a lot from her trend setting style.

Tulle – Some of the most easily recognized and memorable image of Carrie involved tulle. And everyone remembers that roller coaster series final as she struggled to find her place in Paris, and Big finally made a smart decision and came to bring her home to New York. Her amazing tulle dress almost stole the show and is one of her most iconic looks.

To recreate this look and make it trendy as well, pair a tulle skirt with a crop top and blazer for a great night out look or pair it with a chambray shirt or sweater for a funky modern twist.

2

Prints – Carrie often wore eye-catching prints and patterns, and mixing prints is right on trend today as well. Mixing prints can be a bit tricky, but a good rule of thumb is, if you have a big bold print, pair it with a smaller more subtle print. This keeps your outfit from becoming overwhelming.  If you don’t think you’re ready for all the attention that can come with rocking big prints, you can just keep it subtle to start.

To create your own modern printed look, you can try mixing a bold floral or animal print with a little pinstripe or a cool tribal print with small polka dots.

3

Bags and Shoes – No ensemble is complete without a great handbag and fabulous shoes. Carrie knew this better than anyone. After all, Sex and the City practically put Manolos on the map. Your shoes and bag can completely change your whole look, and there’s a lot of freedom these days.  Gone are the days when you have to match your shoes and bag. Today there are practically no rules, and in part, we have Carrie to thank for that.

You can draw inspiration from Carrie no matter how you like to complete your outfits. Whether you coordinate your shoes and bag or you flaunt a metallic pink clutch with bold red pumps, if you’re comfortable, you’re doing it right.

4

Anytime I watch reruns of Sex and the City, I draw fashion inspiration from the characters, but Carrie’s always stood out the most. Carrie’s style is all about taking risks and simply having the confidence to pull them off. She used fashion as the expression of her true self which is the best inspiration.

10 Films for Fashion Lovers

$
0

In July, we offered you ten book recommendations to satisfy your inner fashionista, and while books are a great way to indulge in your interests and unearth new information, cinema is a terrific way to indulge further and surround yourself with a cornucopia of aesthetic inspiration. So, without further ado, here are ten movies that are a must-watch for anyone who loves fashion and style.

  • Iris (2014), dir. Albert Maysles

To start us off with some major style inspo, this documentary follows Iris Apfel, an interior designer who found herself dubbed as a fashion icon later in life. She arguably shot to fame after her signature style was turned into an exhibit in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005.
    1
  • Clueless (1995), dir. Amy Heckerling

I may be biased because this has been a movie I watch several times a year and can quote endlessly, but this ‘90s classic is a treasure trove of iconic style choices. The main character Cher Horowitz somehow turns all of her distinctively ‘90s looks into outfits that are timelessly trendy.
    2
  • The September Issue (2009), dir. R. J. Cutler

Vogue’s infamous September issue is one of the most anticipated publications for fashion and style enthusiasts everywhere and this documentary details what goes into planning the issue as well as giving viewers a closer look at the life of the famously frosty Anna Wintour.
    3
  • The Devil Wears Prada (2006), dir. David Frankel

A must-see (and must-read) for every fashion lover, The Devil Wears Prada follows Anne Hathaway’s character as she tried to survive working for Meryl Streep’s Wintour-esque editor-in-chief of a fictionalized fashion magazine. Anyone can gain a lot of inspiration from watching Hathaway’s character go through her style journey, as well as her professional one.
    4
  • Coco Before Chanel (2009), dir. Anne Fontaine

This biopic period piece is an account of the early life of Coco Chanel, before she became a household name and a figure of great prominence in the fashion industry, when she was still a seamstress and part-time cabaret singer.
    5
  • Zoolander (2001), dir. Ben Stiller

This absurd comedy is probably a surprising choice, but here me out. The film’s completely ridiculous look at the fashion and modelling industry does have undercurrents that ring true, like the exploitation of models, political agendas, and general corruption of the industry. Plus, if you submit to the stupidity, it’s a good laugh.
    6
  • The True Cost (2015), dir. Andrew Morgan

Aaaaand a swift break away from anything farcical, The True Cost is a documentary about the conditions of sweatshops and the implications of buying from fast fashion retailers. It’s a sobering watch for anyone whether or not you have an interest in clothes.
    7
  • Sex and the City (2008), dir. Michael Patrick King

People either love or hate the story of Carrie Bradshaw, a stylish writer living in New York City and experiencing the ups and downs of sex and relationships, sharing it all with her three best friends and us, the viewers. While none of the women in the series and it’s feature film work in the fashion industry, each one of them has a distinct style and a passion for clothes that will inspire any viewer.

    8

Honorable mention: Sex and the City 2; it’ll give you just as much style envy as the first one, although the quality of the script takes a steep dive.
  • Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009), dir. P. J. Hogan

While the books take us to London to read about our shopaholic protagonist, the movie takes us to New York City with the glamorous Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy. It’s a lighthearted look at the intoxicating appeal of the fashion industry and consumerism while also suggesting a deeper message about financial responsibility and the dangers of capitalism taking over your life.
    9f
  • A Single Man, (2009), dir. Tom Ford

Even though this film’s plot of a gay man in the 1960s mourning the loss of his partner has little to do with the fashion industry, the fact that it was directed by iconic designer Tom Ford lends it tons of stylish edge and clean aesthetics.
